Alex Colman joined Wilson Gunn in 2026 from another specialist intellectual property law firm, where he developed a reputation as a trusted adviser on complex and strategically important patent matters. Alex began his career in intellectual property in 2013 and is a qualified Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney.
Alex advises clients on the development, management and defence of patent portfolios, drawing on a technical background that includes a master’s degree and a doctorate in structural engineering. He has wide experience across engineering and physical technologies, with particular experience in medical device technologies, as well as construction and automotive technologies.
Alex advises on the drafting and prosecution of UK and European patent applications and on wider patent strategy, supporting clients in making decisions around portfolio development, freedom to operate and risk management. Alex has significant experience in contentious European Patent Office opposition and appeal proceedings, where he represents clients in the defence and challenge of patents against third parties.
Alex works with global corporations, SMEs and emerging inventors, often as part of cross-functional teams. His advice is clear, pragmatic and commercially focused, helping clients protect innovation, manage risk and maintain strong competitive positions in their markets.
