Joanna Westwood M.Chem., Ph.D., MRSC

Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, European Design Attorney

Joanna Westwood read chemistry at the University of Exeter and obtained the highest overall marks in the final year examinations. Joanna was awarded a Ph.D. in co-ordination chemistry from the same university for her research into metallocene-based sensors for barbiturate compounds. She also authored a number of scientific papers during this time. Joanna is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Having entered the profession in 2002, Joanna trained in the chemical team of a private practice firm, qualifying as a Chartered and European Patent Attorney. During her training, Joanna won the Moss Prize for passing the foundation level patent papers with the highest aggregate mark and the Strode Prize for the highest mark in the advanced level Patent Agents' Practice paper. Joanna moved to Wilson Gunn in 2007 and specialises in the handling of chemical, pharmaceutical, healthcare and mechanical inventions. She has particular expertise in the field of formulation chemistry having worked extensively with clients in the FMCG industries. Joanna has experience in the handling of oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office. She also advises in relation to a range of copyright and design issues.
